Hardy (Jeremy Irons) reluctantly invites Ramanujan to work with him in pursuit of some important solutions. Many at Cambridge find it offensive that a poor boy from India has much higher abilities than themselves, but Dr. He claims to see beautiful mathematical order in the universe, from the sand to the stars. He informs them that they come to him from his Hindu god. In England, his genius confounds the scholars, who wonder how he arrives at such magnificent ideas. He agrees to go with the promise that he will call for his young wife to join him as soon as possible. He eventually receives an invitation to go to Cambridge University in England to work with some of the world’s leading mathematicians. Even his mentors can’t understand the brilliant calculations he creates. The story begins with Srinivasa Ramanujan (Dev Patel) struggling to find work in Madras, India using his astounding gift as a mathematician. The movie contains some racially inspired violence and some positive references to the Hindu religion, but makes a strong case for the existence of God-created order in the universe. The beauty and order in the universe is a sign from God to man revealing God’s glory. Many of Hollywood’s most gifted filmmakers are not believers. God, the God of the Bible, doesn’t bestow gifts only on believers. The math in THE MAN WHO KNEW INFINITY is far beyond anything the average moviegoer can understand, but the movie’s story of genius and prejudice is clear.
